Season of Service Leadership Luncheon
11:30am to 1:30pm
Grand Ballroom of the Portland Hilton.
The lunch is designed to provide an opportunity for leaders, who desire to serve and better their community, to share ideas, and network with one another. Mayor Tom Potter is already involved, as well as the mayors of Beaverton, Vancouver, Hillsboro, and Gresham. First proposed by Luis Palau and more than 450 local churches, these civic, corporate, and church leaders have all joined together with a goal of mobilizing more than 15,000 volunteers to serve the community this summer.
This significant new community building initiative, called“Season of Service”
The Season of Service will conclude with a huge celebration, Portland CityFest, at Waterfront Park on August 22-23. Portland CityFest will feature great music, good food, action sports, a family fun zone, and other activities designed to give Luis Palau an opportunity to share his message as well as challenge folks to continue serving long term.
If you are interested in The Season of Service initiative please go to: http://www.portlandcityfest.com. There is a place to register on the website. There are a lot of ways to get involved either individually, through your company or through your church. In addition to working with churches and the business community, we are also working with a number of high schools, higher education institutions, nonprofits, charitable organizations and even a young professionals group to build our community through service during this “Season of Service”.

A three-day seminar devoted to the five senses in the Christian life. Peter W. Marty will ponder what role the human senses play for those eager to make Christian sense of their lives. Drawing on cultural realities and biblical imagery, he will discuss the difference that a keen awareness of our senses can make for living with Christ-like perspective and passion. Marty E. Marty will discuss the role of the human senses as they play out in public spheres of life. He will look at the church through the sensibilities of the world, and the world through the complex simplicity of the church.
Martin Marty is the Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of the History of Modern Christianity, University of Chicago Divinity School and columnist for The Christian Century. He has written extensively on 19th century and 20th century American religion, authoring over 5,000 articles and publishing numerous books. He is a commentator and highly regarded as a Christian educator. His son, Peter Marty is host of Grace Matters, and senior pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church a 3,000 member congregation in Davenport, Iowa. This is there first joint appearance.
Board of Pension ( BOP)
Health Risk Assessment
Did you know employees of the ELCA receive incentives for completing an on-line health assessment? Spouses are also able to receive the benefits-and may not have done the online assessment. The benefits include help losing weight, finding a resource for your particular health need, and receiving up to $300 to help cover costs, such as medical co-pays and other out-of pocket costs. The Board of Pensions will give a 2% discount on 2008 health plan contributions to ELCA organizations and sponsoring employers within a synod when at least 75% of plan member employees and spouses in that organization or synod take the Mayo Clinic Health Risk Assessment.
Currently the Oregon Synod stands at 57.1% with 35 plan member employees and spouses still needingto take the HRA to get us 75%.
Once 75% or more of our plan member employees and spouses take the health risk assessment, the employer, or employers in our synod, will qualify for a 2% discount on health plan contributions, starting the month after the synod reaches the 75% threshold.
