July 2008
Lutheran Disaster Response NW Update NW

1. Counties impacted by the Dec 07 Disaster:
Clatsop, Columbia, Polk, Tillamook, Washington, Yamhill.

  • Clatsop has the largest number of homes impacted.
  • Columbia has the largest number of homes destroyed.
  • Projects need volunteers and in some cases money for building materials.
  • Additional cases in Tillamook and Yamhill counties need some help.

    2. A Volunteer Team Coordinator, Phyllis Wright has been employed. She has extensive experience in the gulf coast, with Red Cross, and Presbyterian Disaster Response. She has recruited and trained volunteers. To contact Phyllis email at pwright12@juno.com or call Norene's office at 503-731-9519. Projects will be ongoing for several months.

    3. The Tool Trailer has provided a great resource for work teams. Currently it is located in Clatsop County, and will be at sites there or in Columbia County, depending on the projects undertaken. Thanks for the church and individual donations that put the Tool Trailer on the road.

    4. Pressure Washer Available
The Pressure Washer is not currently needed for disaster response. It is a commercial washer with 2200 psi. If your congregation has a moss or mold problem check it out with Norene 503-502-6211. It is located in Portland at Augustana Lutheran. Folks there can train your team in its use.

    5. Funds continue to be needed. Building Materials are needed now. Appliances will be needed later especially in Columbia County. Encourage groups in your congregation to consider this need. Funds can be sent to LDR-NW in Portland.

    6. LDR-NW Training for congregations is being prepared. We will need a trainer in each Cluster. A Train the Trainer event is being planned for this Fall. Let Norene know if you have a volunteer who would like to work with churches and their families in disaster preparedness.

September 13
New Consecration Sunday Seminar
St. Paul Lutheran Church, 3880 SE Brooklyn Street, Portland
9:30 am until noon

It’s that time of year to be planning your congregation’s fall stewardship drive. If you haven’t already decided what your program will be, the synod stewardship committee has a suggestion. The New Consecration Sunday program is very effective in teaching Biblical giving practices including tithing and first fruit giving. Developing faithful habits in giving is an important part of teaching the faith. This seminar will give you insight into the updates that Herb Miller has made to this program if you are already familiar with the (classic) Consecration Sunday program. As a new user, you will find the orientation very helpful for planning your use of these materials in your congregation for this year or next year.

The synod stewardship committee is hosting an orientation on this new program. Please join us at St. Paul Lutheran Church (3880 SE Brooklyn Street, Portland) on Saturday, September 13 from 9:30 am until noon. There is a $20 registration fee per congregation with an unlimited number of people attending from each congregation. Please contact Becky Brown to register or if you have questions about the event: 503-244-1797 or becky.brown@comcast.net (don’t forget the dot between becky and brown). Visit www.oregonsynod.org/growingfaith/stewardship/index.htm for more information. We look forward to seeing you at the event.

On Wednesday, July 16 the Board of Regents of Concordia University voted to authorize the University’s creation of a law school program in Boise,
subject to 1) acquisition of startup capital and 2) approval of a dean.

Concordia University is a private, Lutheran, liberal arts university located in Portland, Oregon. Historically, the University has drawn students from Idaho as well as throughout the Northwest. This has led naturally to a significant relationship between Idaho and the University, including philanthropic support, student recruitment and mutual interest.

Given this rich history, the Board of Regents welcomes the opportunity to offer an important and needed degree program in Idaho. Boise is one of the few major metropolitan areas in the country without a law school. The Law School will support the needs and aspirations of college graduates and the business, legal and public policy communities of the entire state.

Through periodic statements and other means, the University will keep its constituencies informed as they progress.

Host: Nationally and Internationally Recognized Actor, Chuck Neighbors

Trinity Lutheran Church, 500 N. Second St., Silverton
7:00 p.m.
Put November 1st on your calendar and reserve your church bus or van for a trip to Silverton in November. Trinity will host a drama performance by nationally and internationally recognized actor, Chuck Neighbors.

  • The Parable of the Talents set in a psychiatrist's office from a patient who is struggling with life after losing his job.
  • The Parable of the Prodigal Son from the "other son's" point of view as he communicates his feelings toward his wayward brother.
  • The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard from a disgruntled employee trying to come to terms with the boss's apparent favoritism.
  • The Parable Good Samaritan from the victim's perspective, as he discovers what it means to "love your neighbor as yourself."
  • The Parable of the Sower and the Seeds from a grandfather sharing the sorrow and joys of the differing paths his children have chosen.

A freewill offering will be received for the work of Masters Image Productions. For more information, email trinityevents@wildblue.net or phone 503-874-9481.
