Environment Resolution
Resolution to the Assembly of the Oregon Synod of the ELCA From the Environmental Stewardship Committee of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Portland, Oregon
WHEREAS, we are all commanded by God to “till and keep” (Genesis 2:15) God’s Creation;
WHEREAS, God’s Creation is threatened by climate change, which has largely been influenced by human activities;
WHEREAS, humankind’s ubiquitous use of fossil fuels is contributing to a precipitous rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide leading to climate change;
WHEREAS, the effects of climate change will most affect the poor and oppressed;
WHEREAS, there now exist alternative sources to burning fossil fuel for the supply of electricity, heating/cooling, and transportation;
THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Oregon Synod Assembly of the ELCA encourage all member congregations, as well as individuals within their faith communities, to seek alternative, renewable sources for energy used in their churches and homes and to promote practices that will conserve the
resources of God’s Creation for the benefit of future generations.
About the "God's Work. Our Hands." Campaign
If you're not, we invite you to begin, today, to be a proud ambassador of our church. Spread the word about the many lives affected positively by the ELCA. Ask your pastor or a leader in your congregation about programs and ministries your congregation offers. Invite a friend to come to worship the next time you go. Tell them about the ELCA and how it brings meaning and purpose to your life.
